In “Crit Wall”,  I offer online critiques of individual art pieces in my journal.  I’ll write a comprehensive critique for each work.

To submit, send me a link to one image by sending a note to me. [link]   Please include the media, size, and title if you have one.  Only submit original, finished works, no works in progress or sketches. Artwork created for a RISD degree program course is not eligible.

You’ll receive notification if your piece is selected to be critiqued. Only one submission per person please, and know that I will not be able to critique every single work due to the volume of submissions. All images will be posted anonymously.

I look forward to seeing your work!

Currently working on a woodcut print and the carving is painfully laborious.

Anyone know an easier way to carve that won't take forever?

Some people use a dremel tool, but I find it was too bouncy and hard to control and I don't like the texture it creates. They are a little expensive, but you could look into getting an electric chisel. It's great for removing large sections of wood and to me it still has the feel of traditional tools.

Is your woodcut painfully laborious because it is large?

I think it was my wood, I know there are easier woods to cut into.
I eventually used an actual knife and that worked better.

Its always gonna be kinda slow going. But it helps a lot if your tools are high quality carbon steel and you keep them razor sharp. When using a tool I usually run it over a strop with a mild abrasive every 10 minutes or so. Or you could use a Dremel :p

Thanks for replying!
I used a speedball carving tool and eventually used an actual knife haha, worked a lot better.

I definitely want to invest in a Dremel.

Oh god. Don't ever use anything made by Speedball! Literally the worst quality printmaking tools available. Get some tools like this: [link] Flexcut and PowerGrip also make good carving tools from what I understand. And you'll definitely need a leather strop and a sharpening abrasive. Eventually some whetstones if you're serious about it. Feel free to message me if you need some help!

hi! i'll try to explain: maybe the wood that you are carving is very hard, if not, i think that the problem is in your tools, first make sure that they are well sharpened. if your wood don't have grain (that is, you can cut it in any direction) move the piece of wood and leave static the tool (this is very useful for making curves).

sorry for my poor english.
